This 1971 Volkswagen Type 2 is a pop-top camper that is powered by a replacement 1.6-liter flat-four mated to a four-speed manual transaxle. The van is said to have spent time in Alaska and was reportedly refurbished under prior ownership. Equipment includes 14″ wheels, a pop-up roof tent, an Add-A-Room tent, jalousie windows, utility connections, a folding rear bench, storage compartments, folding tables, a sink, Coco floor mats, bamboo parcel shelves, and an aftermarket CD stereo. It was acquired by the current owner in 2016, and work in 2023 consisted of replacing the valve cover gaskets, exhaust gasket, and fuel filter. This Type 2 is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner with parts and service records beginning in 2011 along with an Arizona title.
The van is said to have been repainted its current shade of ivory under previous ownership. Equipment includes white-finished bumpers with overriders, headlight hoods, dual side mirrors, jalousie side windows, a utility inlet, VW logo mud flaps, a front-mounted spare carrier, and quadruple exhaust outlets with polished finishers. The seller notes evidence of body filler in the front dog legs and around a rear wheel arch, along with ripples in the left quarter panel and other blemishes around the body as shown in the gallery.
The 14″ steel wheels feature chrome VW logo hubcaps and trim rings and wear 195/75 Hankook Optimo H724 tires that were mounted in 2021. Stopping power is provided by front disc and rear drum brakes.
The front cabin is equipped with white vinyl-upholstered bucket seats and amenities include three-point seatbelts, bamboo parcel shelves, Coco floor mats, and a Pioneer CD stereo wired to speakers mounted in the door panels.
A two-spoke steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation consisting of a 90-mph speedometer, a fuel level gauge, and warning lights. The five-digit odometer shows 27k miles and total mileage is unknown.
The rear of the cabin is equipped with a yellow vinyl bench that folds into a bed, along with a matching rear-facing seat. Additional appointments include a fold-out table, storage cabinets, privacy curtains, residential-style outlets, a sink, a refrigerator, a VW-branded bottle opener, a portable solar panel and power inverter, a rear screen for the hatch opening, and a pop-top roof tent with zip-up windows and a bed platform. Peeling is noted on the floor. A Bus Depot Add-A-Room tent is included in the sale.
A replacement 1.6-liter flat-four was installed under prior ownership per the seller. Pertronix ignition and a replacement Solex carburetor were installed in 2016, and a Bosch alternator was fitted in place of the factory generator in 2018. Work carried out in 2023 included replacing the valve cover gaskets and an exhaust flange gasket.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle. Corrosion is present on the underside components, additional photos of which are provided in the gallery.
The Arizona title is listed as a duplicate.
